| On your first visit, a full medical case
history will be taken.
You will then be asked to undress to your underwear and to
perform a few simple movements so the osteopath can assess
the problem. The osteopath will also use their hands using
a very gentle highly developed sense of touch called palpation
to assess areas of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain
within your body. A few simple medical tests may also be used,
eg. reflex tests, and blood pressure.
From this the osteopath will make a diagnosis and discuss
it with you. If osteopathic treatment is suitable it will
be offered to you. You can always ask questions at any time
and, if you change your mind about the examination/treatment,
the osteopath will always respect your decision. You are always
welcome to bring a chaperone with you. Sometimes an osteopath
may need to request further tests (usually through your GP)
such as X-rays or blood tests, but this is always done with
your permission first before contact is made with your doctor/specialist.
The treatment will normally involve some soft-tissue massage,
gentle mobilisation of affected joints and manual adjustment
(as described before). Advice is usually offered on posture
and lifting, and hydrotherapy and exercises encouraged.
