Osteopathy is a
safe, established and recognised system of diagnosis and treatment
for the whole body which lays its main emphasis on the structural
and functional integrity of the body. It recognises that the
symptoms of pain and disability often stem from abnormalities
in the function and balance of the body structure as well as
the damage caused by injury and disease.
Osteopaths look at the body as a whole, and work with
their hands. Every patient is listened to, and then assessed
from a mechanical, functional and structural point of view
so that the overall balance and specific areas of complaint
are recorded. A treatment plan is individually tailored to
suit each patient’s particular needs and usually consists
of a combination of gentle soft-tissue releasing techniques
and some specific adjustments affecting joints and soft-tissues
(muscles, tendons and ligaments). It is often supported by
advice on exercises and hydrotherapy which can be done at
home.
